How to make Shrinky Dinks, everything you need to know! Craft
To make the initial a little wider to make a sturdier keychain, we can add a border using the “Offset” function. Once they are both selected, click “Flatten” on the lower right menu to turn the selection into a Print Then Cut group! The last step is to select both the sunflower and the letter by clicking and dragging a box over top of both.
It’s a fun choice for back-to-school workshops as it is so easy to install and comes in fun colors. The backpack has a natural point on the design to add a jumpring and keychain but the others needed holes punched. You can then flatten it further with a silicone turner or whatever you have handy (I used my metal water bottle.) The plastic will twist and turn all different ways but once you’ve properly melted it all, it should lay mostly flat. I wanted to show this to you using an affordable but high quality paint marker, so I used Ohuhu’s dual tipped acrylic markers for this. But you can, of course, take the “I’m just doing it” approach and ignore these instructions – do it the way you always have!

In the past we posted a tutorial on how to use the iconic childhood craft supply, Perler beads, to create a fun and unique earring holder (check it out here). Trust the process; the heat will condense those colors back to their full, rich intent. This is particularly useful for adding highlights or metallic accents that a standard inkjet printer cannot produce. If you notice the colors running or blurring into one another, it is often a sign of “over-inking.” This happens when the printer settings are putting down more ink than the matte coating can absorb. Even with the right materials, you may encounter obstacles.
Oven Temperature for Shrinky Dinks
Be sure to use thin layers of paint and allow each layer to dry completely before adding another, as thick layers of paint may crack or peel off after shrinking. The colors will intensify and become more vibrant as the plastic shrinks, creating a beautiful finished product. So remember to position the drawing inked-side up on the tray. Then press a sheet of paper or cardboard on top of the Shrinky Dinks and lightly press flat (I used a small book to weigh it down). I lowered the temperature to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (148 degrees Celsius) in the following batches (no smoke…YAY!). When the timer rang, I put in the tray with the Shrinky Dinks and set the timer to 3 minutes (the baking time indicated in the instructions were 1-3 minutes).

You can also use permanent markers (like Sharpies) to color in your Shrinky Dink creations, however, colors may darken when baked. Also, the final Shrinky Dinks colors turned out very vivid and bright. We used colored pencils to color in our design and it worked perfectly.
